Hello and welcome to my channel! I am a Zyra one trick who believes in being educational, positive, doing more damage than my ADC, and having a good time. I highly encourage you to chat with me and other people in the channel as interactivity is a focus in this stream. Really, ask me anything! Sometimes in game I can get a bit busy, but I read chat as often as I can. If things are busy, feel free to tag me with @melyn so I can more easily answer.
I am working full-time and will try to do short streams on Tu/Th and medium streams on weekends. I won't have an actual schedule.
I may stream additional hours and may stream non-league games on my second account. Be sure to follow on Twitch/Twitter and join my Discord for more information.
Why do you do ____ on Zyra? Check out my guides: this link for my text guide (including Zyra support, jungle, and mid) and this playlist for all my video guides and content.
What is your name? My name is Jason. Feel free to call me Melyn or Jason as you prefer.
What server? North America.
What roles do you play? Role preference? I play Zyra support and bot. I used to play Zyra mid/top/jungle, but haven't recently.
When did you start playing LoL? September 13, 2013. I got to gold 1 in preseason 4, D2 in season 4, D1 in season 5, masters in season 6 (peaking around 200 LP and ending the season rank 328), D1 in season 7, master in season 8, and challenger in season 9.
Who made the adorable Zyra emotes? Moncsy
What do you do when Zyra is banned? Usually Brand or Vel'koz, but it doesn't happen often..
Who are your favorite streamers? Dork, a high elo Zyra one trick. I am also a big fan of sirhcez. He has great music, a calm positive atmosphere, and Nasus and Singed are awesome. Additionally, I watch other one tricks and Zyra mains, mostly focusing on laning phases, though I often lurk. Other than that, I don't really have any other streamers I watch particularly, though sometimes I will have pro players' streams in the background.
How did you start playing Zyra? I played a lot of Morgana when I first started doing ranked and I thought it was dumb to build support items, so I just built full damage. Eventually, I played against a Zyra, and I was surprised at how much damage she did and how much poke, so I bought her and tried her out... It didn't go well... Still, I stuck it out and played her almost every game to get to diamond! Then I stopped playing her for a while (lots of Leona, Blitz, etc...) because I got sick of not being able to initiate when JuneBoy came to my stream and asked me to play Zyra. I started again and remembered why I loved her, and now I will almost only play her. ^.^
Where did your name come from? My brother had a character in Maplestory named MelliMelon, and I thought it would be funny to make a character named MeiliMeion (since lower case L looks like upper case i). This became my main character and so when I started playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, I wanted to name my character Melon. This was kind of boring, so I Star Wars-ified it to Melyn.
What do you do for a living? I'm an applied mathematician with a masters degree, currently working as a math instructor at Western Wyoming Community College. My graduate research was in stochastic mixed integer programming, where I developed a branch and bound algorithm that uses progressive hedging to solve these problems.
Why do you sometimes mute all at the beginning of a game? Chat is almost never used to win the game and often is just for flaming and venting. Sometimes if you wait for someone to flame before muting, it's too late and the damage has already been done. This has notably lowered my ranked anxiety and excessive self-criticism. I recommend trying it and seeing how things go for you.
I'm a 30 year old California-native with a masters in applied math working as a math professor in Olympia, WA. I love teaching, making colored pizzas, reading, hiking, and mountain biking. I have a B.S. in mathematics, a B.M. in music (oboe performance), and an M.S. in applied mathematics. In game, I like to focus on teaching viewers with good commentary, maintaining a positive attitude, and focusing on constant improvement rather than winning or losing.
Note, I don't always do these myself, but I certainly try.
1) Never queue up for ranked when you are not willing to lose (else you will be disappointed about half of the time!) Play to improve, not to win.
2) When a play goes bad, accept responsibility whether it's yours or not. Makes others more likely to be aware of their mistakes as well. Also helps keep things positive.
3) When someone does something really stupid and you lose something for it. Don't think how stupid they were, analyze what you should have done given their stupid action.
4) One flame = one mute. Don't argue with or tolerate annoying people. Just mute them and move on. If they aren't bothering you, you can keep them unmuted for team communication, but under no circumstances should you ever respond to anything rude. When in doubt, don't type.
5) Do not give people advice in League unless they specifically (and unsarcastically) ask for it. People are defensive in general and don't appreciate strangers giving advice. Usually this just results in them defensively pointing out your mistakes and devolves into too much typing and not enough winning. Under no circumstances should you ever say "You should have done ____". There is no point. That being said, if someone genuinely asks you what they should do, tell them your opinion politely. Treat people like decent human beings.
